SPECIAL CARE UNIT FOR DISABLED CHIMPANZEES
A new enclosure, built specially for our disabled chimpanzees
SPECIAL CARE FOR SPECIAL RESCUES
At the centre, no rescue, no situation, no animal is too big for us too handle. We do our best to provide everything needed for each individuals own needs. This includes our three special needs chimpanzees, Ghaa, Mayos and Ngambe. This enclosure is built specifically to suit all of their needs, to ensure their health, welfare and happiness while in our care.
Mayos, one of the females in the group, had to be removed from her former group after her eyesight severely degraded and is now almost blind. Ghaa on the other hand, lost a lot of functionality of his lower limbs after sustained serious injuries when he was poached in the Cameroon forests. Due to the damage to his lower limbs, he carries most of his weight on his arms, and therefore we have built his enrichment structures low to encourage his to stay active and climb. Ghaa needs special treatment for arthritis pain and receive his own special diet.
Ngambe has a behavioral disorder which hinders her from successfully integrating into large groups. Therefore she often needs her own space and limits her interaction with others. This made Ghaa and Mayos the perfect playing and grooming partners as they are all calm and live in harmony.
