PRIMATE CARE, RESCUE, REHABILITATION AND RELEASE
Here at the centre, we rescue and rehabilitate 14 different primate species, ranging from great ape such as gorillas and chimpanzees, to large monkeys such as drills and mandrills, to smaller types of primates like the mona monkey, putty nose monkey and many more. Most of the species in our care are listed as vulnerable, endangered or critically endangered on the IUCN list.

Why Primates?
In Cameroon, the illegal demand for primates is significant. Firstly, this can be due to hunting pressure for bushmeat, which might be consumed as a food source locally or coordinated by out-of-region traders for sale in restaurants in the big cities or for onward shipment overseas.
Secondly, most primates in Cameroon are threatened by the illegal wildlife trade. They might be kept in the country and used as entertainment and a tourist attraction, or trafficked abroad to unethical zoos and other institutions for personal or commercial gain. These animals are often badly mistreated, many die in transit or are physically abused, live in very poor unnatural conditions and suffer bad health and welfare.
Along with accelerating rates of habitat destruction, partly through illegal timber logging, this situation has led to a frightening decrease in wild population numbers and ever more poor individuals orphaned or otherwise in need of rescue and care at wildlife sanctuaries such as Limbe Wildlife Centre.
Conservation and protection of these animals needs to happen fast, or they will be lost forever
