Chimpanzees are usually black, an on occasion light grey or silver. They are born with pale faces which can turn darker as they grow, and some have a dark area around the eyes and nose which gives the appearance of a mask. Young chimpanzees have a white tail tuft. They have prominent ears and both males and females have white beards.


The chimpanzee diet consists mainly of fruit, but they also eat leaves, blossoms, seeds and bark. They sometimes eat termites and hunt for meat. Their usual mammalian prey is the red colobus monkey.
